Stay Safe While Job Hunting

Scams targeting backpackers are real. Here's how to protect yourself.

Red Flags — Walk Away Immediately

Upfront fees to "get" the job

Legitimate employers never charge workers to apply, register, or start work. This is illegal in Australia.

Cash-in-hand only, no payslips

If an employer refuses to put you on payroll, your work won't count toward the 88 days AND you have no protection.

No ABN or won't share it

Every legitimate Australian business has an ABN. Verify it at business.gov.au before you start.

Accommodation "included" but overpriced

Some employers overcharge for housing. Know your rights — accommodation deductions have legal limits under award rates.

"Trust me, it counts for 88 days"

Verify postcodes and industries yourself on the official Home Affairs website. Don't rely on an employer's word.

Asking for your passport or bank details before a contract

Share these only when you've signed a contract and started work. Never send photos to strangers online.
