You are always entitled to:
- ✓The national minimum wage or your award rate — whichever is higher
- ✓A payslip every pay period showing hours, rate and tax withheld
- ✓Superannuation (12% of ordinary earnings)
- ✓The 15% WHV tax rate if your employer is ATO-registered
- ✓A safe workplace and the right to refuse unsafe work

Backpacker minimum wage Australia
Backpackers on a Working Holiday Visa generally have the same workplace pay protections as other workers in the national system. Your visa does not let an employer legally pay a lower rate.
From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour ($1004.90 for a 38-hour week). Award/agreement-free casual adults are $33.05/hr (includes 25% casual loading).
The National Minimum Wage is only the baseline for workers not covered by a higher applicable award or enterprise agreement. Many backpacker jobs — farm work, hospitality, cleaning, warehouse, construction — are covered by awards. Classification and duties affect the actual minimum.

There is no single hourly rate for every job title. The legal minimum depends on the award, classification, employment type and when you work.

Farm work pay
Most fruit, vegetable and packing-shed roles sit under the Horticulture Award. Livestock and dairy roles often sit under the Pastoral Award. Casual rates usually include 25% loading. Pay may be hourly or piece rate.
Horticulture Award Level 1 adult rates from 1 July 2026: $25.74/hr full-time / part-time, or $32.18/hr casual. Level 1 is time-limited; Level 2 adult rates are $26.44/hr / $33.05/hr casual.
Classification matters: duties, skill and how long you have been at Level 1 change the minimum that applies.

Fruit picking may be paid hourly or by piece rate (per bin, tray, bucket or kilogram). Piece rate does not automatically mean you can earn below the applicable minimum guarantee for the hours worked.
Track hours and quantities picked. Convert piece earnings to an effective hourly rate, then compare it with your award entitlement.
Piece rates — worked example
If you receive $4 per bucket and pick 50 buckets:
$4 × 50 = $200 total
If you worked 8 hours:
$200 ÷ 8 = $25.00/hour effective rate
Compare that effective hourly rate with the applicable legal entitlement (for example Horticulture Award casual Level 1 at $32.18/hr). In this example, $25.00/hr is below that casual Level 1 figure.

Casual loading (commonly 25%, or ×1.25) compensates for the lack of paid annual leave and paid personal/carer's leave. That is why casual hourly rates usually look higher than full-time rates for the same classification.
Award rates still differ by level. Weekends and public holidays can attract extra penalty rates depending on the award — verify those in Fair Work rather than assuming a flat weekday rate applies every day.
Do backpackers get super in Australia?
Eligible workers generally receive employer Super Guarantee contributions. The current rate is 12% of ordinary time earnings. Super is paid into a fund — it is separate from your take-home pay.
When you leave Australia permanently, separate ATO rules may allow a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP).
How to tell if you're being underpaid
- Check your employment type (casual, part-time or full-time).
- Check which award covers the work.
- Check your classification / level.
- Compare your hourly rate or effective piece rate.
- Keep your own timesheets (start, finish, breaks).
- Keep every payslip.
- Check deductions (accommodation, transport, equipment) are lawful and listed.
