How does Immigration count your 88 days?
The “88 days” is not simply 88 calendar days in a row. Immigration counts days based on a weekly hours threshold that depends on your work type. This is often called the “Maria Case” method, based on research into how Home Affairs actually processes visa applications.
For most farm work (plant and animal cultivation), you need to average at least 30 hours per week to be credited with a full 7 days per week. If you work 24–29 hours, you only receive 4 days per week — meaning it takes 22 weeks instead of 13 to reach 88 days.
For mining, construction, and tourism & hospitality in Northern Australia, the threshold is 38 hours per week for a full week of credit.
Disaster recovery work (bushfire, flood) is simpler — any day you work counts as one credited day.
