Published 9 October 2026

Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth or somewhere smaller? Australia offers very different job markets, climates and lifestyles. The smartest choice is the one that matches your experience, housing budget, transport options and preferred way of living.

This comparison covers 12 destinations and distinguishes each city's major economic industries from the jobs a Working Holiday Maker can realistically pursue. Rental figures for entire properties are published medians. Private-room costs and living budgets are planning scenarios, not official statistics. All prices are in AUD.

1. The 12 destinations at a glance

DestinationMain industriesLifestyle / coast
SydneyBanking, finance, technology, professional servicesInternational city + ocean beaches
MelbourneFinance, technology, healthcare, manufacturingCulture, nightlife + bay beaches
BrisbaneHealthcare, business, construction, logisticsSubtropical river city; coast outside the centre
Gold CoastTourism, healthcare, construction, educationSurf beaches + nightlife
Sunshine CoastHealthcare, construction, tourismSurf beaches + quieter outdoor life
PerthMining, energy, engineering, constructionResources economy + excellent beaches
AdelaideDefence, manufacturing, healthcare, technologyCompact city + metropolitan beaches
CairnsTourism, healthcare, marine servicesReef + rainforest; swimming precautions
DarwinDefence, government, logistics, constructionTropical Top End; limited ocean swimming
HobartHealthcare, government, tourismMountains + cool coastal weather
CanberraGovernment, defence, cybersecurityMuseums, parks; no ocean beach
Byron BayTourism, hospitality, wellnessSurf culture + very high coastal rents

Industries describe the local economy. A visa holder's access to jobs depends on qualifications, work rights and the employer.

2. What does housing actually cost?

Australia generally advertises rent per week. A private bedroom in a shared house, a whole apartment and a whole house are different products. The most reliable cross-city comparison for entire properties is a metropolitan median, but it covers different bedroom counts and neighbourhoods.

Median weekly rents: capital cities

Capital cityWhole unit / apartmentWhole house
Sydney$780$835
Melbourne$600$600
Brisbane$660$700
Perth$700$750
Adelaide$550$650
Canberra$580$700
Hobart$525$625
Darwin$650$800

Coastal markets: suburb benchmarks

Suburb / destinationWhole unitWhole house2-bed unit
Surfers Paradise / Gold Coast$770$1,200$825
Maroochydore / Sunshine Coast$730$895$700
Noosa Heads / Sunshine Coast$995$1,400$940
Parramatta Park / Cairns$500$600$520
Byron Bay$950$1,525$900

Source: realestate.com.au 12-month suburb profiles, accessed around October 2026. These are local markets, not whole-city medians. A premium coastal neighbourhood is not representative of its entire region. A two-bedroom unit median is a better starting point for two friends sharing than an all-units median.

Private room: practical planning ranges

DestinationPrivate room / weekDestinationPrivate room / week
Sydney$240–430Melbourne$200–360
Brisbane$240–360Gold Coast$300–450
Sunshine Coast$250–420Perth$270–420
Adelaide$200–350Cairns$220–350
Darwin$280–440Hobart$210–350
Canberra$240–390Byron Bay$350–550

Editorial planning ranges for a private bedroom in a shared property — not verified statistical medians. Bills may be extra. Check current Flatmates.com.au listings.

Sharing example. Two friends find a two-bedroom unit advertised at $700/week. With one occupant per bedroom, each pays $350/week rent before bills. Do not automatically divide the citywide unit median by two: that median includes studios, one-bedroom and larger units.

3. How the weekly budget is calculated

The same single-person profile is used across cities: one adult rents a private bedroom, cooks most meals at home, has modest leisure spending and does not own a car. Rent and transport vary by location. Other spending is held constant.

Everyday expenseAssumption / week
Groceries + household food$110
Shared electricity, gas, water + internet$25
Mobile phone$12
Personal, occasional social + miscellaneous$75
Subtotal excluding rent + transport$222

Assumptions, not a measured household expenditure series. Healthcare, flights, major holidays, visa fees, car ownership and emergencies are excluded.

DestinationRoom / weekTransportTotal / week
Sydney$240–430$50$512–702
Melbourne$200–360$45$467–627
Brisbane$240–360$40$502–622
Gold Coast$300–450$50$572–722
Sunshine Coast$250–420$80$552–722
Perth$270–420$55$547–697
Adelaide$200–350$40$462–612
Cairns$220–350$75$517–647
Darwin$280–440$80$582–742
Hobart$210–350$80$512–652
Canberra$240–390$50$512–662
Byron Bay$350–550$80$652–852

Total = private room estimate + $222 basic spending + an illustrative transport allowance. Transport is not the official fare, and it is not the full cost of owning a car.

Worked example, Sydney. Rent $340 + groceries $110 + bills/internet $25 + phone $12 + transport $50 + personal spending $75 = $612/week, or roughly $2,652/month (52 weeks ÷ 12).

A cheaper suburb can still be an expensive choice when work is far away. For a car-dependent job, add insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, parking and depreciation separately. A room with utilities included should not have the $25 bills allowance added twice.

4. The real economies and jobs in each city

A city's dominant industries tell you where employers are concentrated. They do not guarantee an easy entry-level job. Financial services, engineering, healthcare and government jobs may require qualifications, licensing, security checks or longer work rights. A Working Holiday Visa can also limit how long you work for the same employer — check your own conditions.

Sydney, NSW

Main industries. Banking, investment, insurance, fintech, technology, professional services, corporate HQs, healthcare and media.

Jobs to explore. For skilled applicants: finance, business analysis, software, marketing, operations, accounting and professional contracting. Also retail, events, hotels, hospitality, warehousing, cleaning and construction support.

Lifestyle, beaches and transport. Bondi, Coogee, Manly and Cronulla offer ocean beaches; Newtown and Marrickville offer inner-city culture. Strong train, bus, metro and ferry networks.

Trade-off. Excellent variety, but high accommodation costs, competition for central roles and potentially long commutes.

Melbourne, VIC

Main industries. Professional services, finance, healthcare, education, technology, manufacturing, logistics, arts and media.

Jobs to explore. Corporate operations, technology, accounting, healthcare support where eligible, logistics, manufacturing, marketing, retail, hospitality and events.

Lifestyle, beaches and transport. Brunswick, Fitzroy, Carlton, Richmond and St Kilda offer distinct neighbourhoods. Good rail and tram network; bay beaches are different from ocean surf breaks.

Trade-off. Culture and nightlife are strong draws, but winter is colder and the weather more changeable.

Brisbane, QLD

Main industries. Healthcare, professional services, construction, education, transport, logistics and technology.

Jobs to explore. Administration, business support, construction, logistics, retail, hotels, customer service and healthcare support subject to eligibility.

Lifestyle, beaches and transport. Subtropical outdoor lifestyle, riverfront dining and sporting events. Trains, buses and ferries serve major corridors; proper ocean beaches require travel.

Trade-off. Warm winters, humid summers and expensive housing in many well-connected suburbs.

Gold Coast, QLD

Main industries. Tourism, hotels, entertainment, construction, healthcare, education and retail.

Jobs to explore. Resorts, accommodation, theme parks, tour operators, hospitality, customer service, cleaning, retail and construction support.

Lifestyle, beaches and transport. Surfers Paradise for nightlife, Broadbeach for amenities and Burleigh/Coolangatta for surf culture. Tram and bus access varies by location.

Trade-off. Great surfing, but beachside rents and seasonal competition can be high.

Sunshine Coast, QLD

Main industries. Healthcare, construction, tourism, education, retail and local business services.

Jobs to explore. Accommodation, resorts, retail, healthcare support, cleaning, hospitality, tourism and construction.

Lifestyle, beaches and transport. Noosa, Mooloolaba, Maroochydore and Caloundra offer surfing, beaches and hiking. A car is often useful outside central areas.

Trade-off. Relaxed lifestyle, but a smaller job market and uneven public transport.

Perth, WA

Main industries. Mining, energy, oil and gas, engineering, equipment supply, construction, logistics and professional services.

Jobs to explore. Experienced workers: engineering, maintenance, geology, procurement and project roles. Entry-level research: FIFO utility and camp services, cleaning, catering, warehouses and construction support.

Lifestyle, beaches and transport. Scarborough and Cottesloe beaches, sunny summers and outdoor sports. Public transport is useful in the city; resources work is often remote.

Trade-off. FIFO describes fly-in fly-out roster arrangements, not a guaranteed entry-level mining job. Tickets, medicals, licences and experience can matter.

Adelaide, SA

Main industries. Defence, aerospace, advanced manufacturing, food production, healthcare, education and technology.

Jobs to explore. Factory production, logistics, healthcare support, administration, hospitality, retail and eligible engineering roles. Defence jobs may require citizenship or clearance.

Lifestyle, beaches and transport. Glenelg, Henley Beach, festivals, markets and wine regions. Central travel is manageable; some industrial areas need a car.

Trade-off. Potentially lower housing budget, but the professional employment market is smaller than in Sydney or Melbourne.

Cairns, QLD

Main industries. Tourism, reef and marine services, healthcare, construction, education and regional transport.

Jobs to explore. Hotels, tours, reservations, housekeeping, restaurants, customer support, healthcare support and regional agricultural opportunities outside the CBD.

Lifestyle, beaches and transport. Great Barrier Reef, rainforests, waterfalls and a traveller-friendly atmosphere. Waterfront lagoon; northern beaches require marine safety precautions.

Trade-off. Wet-season rain and humidity; tourism recruitment changes seasonally.

Darwin, NT

Main industries. Defence, government, logistics, construction, resources support, healthcare and tourism.

Jobs to explore. Construction, site services, transport, accommodation, hospitality, cleaning, logistics and remote camp services. Government and defence eligibility varies.

Lifestyle, beaches and transport. Top End markets, national parks and a tropical outdoors culture. Do not treat the local coast as a normal ocean swimming destination.

Trade-off. High housing costs relative to size, and strong wet/dry season differences.

Hobart, TAS

Main industries. Government, healthcare, education, professional services, tourism and food industries.

Jobs to explore. Hospitality, accommodation, retail, food services, administration, tourism and health support where eligible. Regional Tasmania has agricultural work.

Lifestyle, beaches and transport. kunanyi / Mount Wellington, hiking, markets, small-city life and nearby cold-water beaches. A car is useful beyond Hobart.

Trade-off. Beautiful nature, but fewer vacancies and noticeably colder winters.

Canberra, ACT

Main industries. Government, defence, cybersecurity, education, research and professional services.

Jobs to explore. Private-sector IT and business support, administration, retail, hotels, events and hospitality. Many public-service roles require citizenship.

Lifestyle, beaches and transport. Museums, parks, cycle routes and Lake Burley Griffin. No nearby ocean beach; winter mornings can be frosty.

Trade-off. A specialised job market and scattered city layout; check actual work-rights requirements.

Byron Bay, NSW

Main industries. Tourism, hospitality, accommodation, retail, wellness and creative local businesses.

Jobs to explore. Cafes, hotels, events, retail, cleaning, tourism and wellness services with suitable qualifications.

Lifestyle, beaches and transport. Surf beaches, lighthouse walks, music, yoga and a backpacker community. Walkable in town, limited regional transit.

Trade-off. Very expensive accommodation relative to the smaller number of jobs; competitive peak seasons.

5. Four-season climate

Australia's seasons run opposite to Europe and North America: summer is December–February, autumn March–May, winter June–August and spring September–November. Figures below are rounded seasonal mean daily maximum / mean daily minimum — not a whole-day average and not a forecast.

Byron Bay28° / 21°24° / 18°20° / 13°24° / 17°

Rounded historical approximations from representative Bureau of Meteorology stations. Microclimates differ. For local precision, use the BOM monthly tables.

  • Summer (Dec–Feb): Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth offer warm to hot beach weather. Cairns and Darwin are generally in the humid wet season; heavy rain can disrupt outdoor plans.
  • Autumn (Mar–May): temperatures ease in the southern cities; rainfall and humidity often begin reducing in the north.
  • Winter (Jun–Aug): Darwin and Cairns stay warm, Brisbane and the Gold Coast are mild, while Melbourne, Hobart and Canberra are distinctly colder. Perth and Adelaide have relatively wet winters.
  • Spring (Sep–Nov): southern cities warm up; the tropical north moves towards hotter, wetter conditions. A similar maximum can feel very different in dry Perth versus humid Cairns.

6. Beaches, swimming and outdoor lifestyle

DestinationSwimming / surfingTypical outdoor appeal
SydneyExcellent ocean beaches + surfingCoastal walks, harbour, parks
MelbourneBay beaches; surf farther outCity cycling, Great Ocean Road
BrisbaneNo city ocean surf beachRiverfront, parks, hinterland trips
Gold CoastExcellent surfing and beachesCoastal fitness + hinterland

HobartCold-water beachesMountains, wilderness
CanberraNo ocean beachCycling, lakes, bushwalking
Byron BayExcellent surfingSurf, lighthouse, wellness

For a daily surf or beach routine, look first at Sydney, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Perth and Byron Bay. Brisbane is a river city rather than an ocean beach city. Cairns and Darwin have tropical scenery but substantial marine swimming hazards. Always follow local patrols, beach warnings, crocodile and marine-stinger advice, and weather conditions.

7. Can you live without a car?

DestinationCar-free practicalityKey caveat
SydneyGenerally strongLong travel times between some suburbs
MelbourneGenerally strongOuter industrial areas
BrisbaneGood in connected districtsSome jobs off transport corridors
Gold CoastReasonable on tram/bus routesInland employment can be awkward
Sunshine CoastMore challengingDispersed towns and shifts
PerthGood in connected districtsIndustrial sites; FIFO arrangements vary

HobartPossible centrallyRegional mobility limited
CanberraPossible in selected corridorsDistributed city layout
Byron BayEasy within townRegional jobs and limited public transport

Ask about shift start times, worksite transport, employer shuttles and required driving licences before you accept a job.

8. Earnings: comparing what is left, not just salaries

The national minimum wage for award/agreement-free adult employees is $26.44/hour from 1 July 2026, before any applicable casual loading. Many roles fall under awards with different classifications, allowances or penalty rates. Check Fair Work rather than assuming every job pays the same amount.

Illustrative earnings. At $34 gross per hour for 30 paid hours, gross earnings are $1,020/week. With a simplified 15% tax withholding assumption, illustrative take-home is $867/week. Actual withholding depends on your circumstances. This is not a take-home pay quote.

DestinationMidpoint budgetIllustrative incomeRemaining / week
Sydney$607$867$260
Melbourne$547$867$320
Brisbane$562$867$305
Perth$622$867$245
Adelaide$537$867$330
Cairns$582$867$285
Darwin$662$867$205

Same hypothetical wage and hours in every city. Amount remaining is not guaranteed savings: travel, insurance, irregular expenses and tax may differ. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Cairns and Darwin are shown because they are the capital-style comparisons in this worked example.

For mining and FIFO roles, compare the full roster, actual paid days, flights to and from the worksite, meals, accommodation, unpaid weeks and upfront certification costs. FIFO is not the same as a guaranteed high-paying mining job.

9. Regional work and the 88 days

The specified-work requirement for a second or third Working Holiday Maker visa depends on visa subclass, eligible industry, geographic area and the work actually performed. Not all farm-adjacent roles or regional hospitality jobs qualify. Subclass 417 and 462 rules differ, and UK passport holders meeting the applicable subclass 417 arrangements can be exempt from specified work requirements.

  • Qualified professional? Search fixed-term corporate contracts as well as casual work.
  • Entry-level traveller? Look for clusters of employers and manageable transport.
  • Saving money? Prioritise stable paid hours and a room near work.
  • Planning the 88 days? Check eligibility before committing to a remote destination.

11. How much cash do you need to arrive?

Upfront moving costs are higher than a typical week: temporary accommodation, a rental bond, rent in advance, groceries, transport, work clothing and time without income can overlap.

Illustrative Sydney first-month expenseAmount
4 weeks room rent at $340$1,360
Refundable bond: 4-week assumption$1,360
4 weeks non-rent costs at $272$1,088
Set-up / contingency$400
Illustrative starting cash need$4,208

Example only. Bond and rent-in-advance legal limits depend on the state and the arrangement. Excludes flights, visa costs, health insurance and a larger emergency reserve. A refundable bond is an upfront cash requirement, not necessarily a permanent cost. Confirm whether an advertised room includes internet, utilities and other charges.

12. A five-step decision checklist

  1. Define your goal: career experience, easy entry-level work, beach lifestyle, regional specified work, or maximising savings.
  2. Search real jobs first, checking location, shift pattern, pay, licensing and visa constraints.
  3. Compare actual accommodation listings: private rooms, two-bedroom units and whole houses in specific suburbs.
  4. Calculate commuting time and the true cost of transport, especially for farms and remote worksites.
  5. Stress-test your monthly budget against fewer working hours, wet season, bond requirements and unexpected costs.

13. Find jobs before choosing your city

Compare major cities with regional opportunities before you decide where to settle. Whether you are looking at office work in Sydney, tourism in Cairns, hospitality on the Gold Coast or mining-related roles in Western Australia, focus on real openings and the lifestyle you can afford.

The best destination is not automatically the highest-paying city or the cheapest postcode. It is where realistic employment, reliable hours, accommodation and your preferred lifestyle come together. Your first city does not have to be your last.

Or start from the Work & Travel hub for regional and profession guides.

Editorial note: rental medians are published market observations. Room prices, transport costs and total living budgets are illustrative estimates built from the assumptions above. Vacancies, wages, weather and visa policy change. G'Day Backpacker Jobs is not a registered migration agent.
