Cairns is the usual base for the northern Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree and the Atherton Tablelands. The esplanade lagoon is free, the botanic gardens and the mangrove boardwalk are an easy half day, and the Skyrail or a Kuranda railway trip is the paid way up into the range. Farm work around Mareeba and the tablelands is a separate search from the reef trips — use the directory and the live job board rather than assuming a hostel notice is a visa-eligible vacancy.
