Port Douglas
Port Douglas is an hour north of Cairns and the usual small-boat base for the outer reef. Four Mile Beach is long and free. The Mossman Gorge road and the Daintree River ferry continue north from here. Cape Tribulation is as far as the sealed road goes. Treat anything past that, including the Bloomfield Track, as a 4WD decision rather than a default leg of a coastal plan.
