Townsville is the city between Airlie Beach and Cairns, and the point where the sealed inland road leaves the coast for Mount Isa and the Northern Territory. The Strand is the free beachfront. Magnetic Island is the short ferry trip. A Big Lap that continues to Katherine turns inland here instead of staying on the Bruce Highway all the way to Cairns, unless you add the reef coast as an out-and-back.
